oh my god

i just woke up and all i can say is “oh my god”. The space shuttle Columbia appears to have been lost. I’m watching the scenes of what appears to be a breakup on CNN. I’m still groggy, having been awake for about 5 minutes.
It’s kinda ironic, since I realized yesterday I completely forgot the Challenger anniversary last week.
6x the times of sound the shuttle broke up into multiple pieces and Miles O’Brien from CNN is now talking about the pieces of the shuttle being reported as landing on the ground at the speed of a shotgun. O’Brien is now saying that a piece of insulation fell off during the launch and is getting audible cues from off camera about who they’ve talked to.
oy. I’m gonna just watch the coverage. wow.

  1. If I had to guess I’d say they’ll use the Soyuz.
When Challenger went down it was nearly three years before the shuttle flew again and that was a a relatively easily understood failure… this one is going to be harder to pin down.
On the other hand, there isn’t much urgency and the ISS is provisioned until June so it’s possible NASA may go ahead and launch a shuttle at the last minute. If it was me, I’d rather take my chances on a shuttle than climb into that Russian tin can.

  2. I forgot that someone is on the space station. someone on slashdot brought up a good point:
“Remember how long it took to reinstate the STS program after the Challenger Incident?
What are the chances NASA will send up STS 108 on schedule?
Will they use the soyuz emergency capsule to return earthside?”
