I had a couple of problems when I moved from Dreamhost to BlogOMania. One problem is that my restored database wouldn’t let me in. Problem two is that I decided to delete two blogs I had on my Dreamhost account. Problem 2 is what I’m dealing with the most. Most of my posts are no longer identified with the MT ID number that they originally had. So if someone is searching on Google and clicks the link, it’s going to the wrong place (now you’re getting a 404). So instead of painstakingly going though and changing this, I decided to change how I organize my archives. Now everything is in the format year/mo/da/postid.php . I’ve wanted to do this for a while, and since everything has been shot to hell I decided to do it how I wanted. So if you click on an old link, you’re gonna get a 404 page with a search engine. Search for the post and update links if you want.

Funny thing, I also recently did the Dreamhost to Blogomania migration, and never noticed that the old blog and new blog assigned different ID’s to the same posts. (This must be a result of deleting posts.) Oh, well, ignorance was bliss.
I don’t think that I’m going to worry about old links not working, as anyone who ends up at my blog can use the built-in search engine to quickly find what they wanted. Next time I move, I’ll just transport the entire MT database, which is what I would have done in the first place if I’d known it was possible. rather than exporting and re-importing the individual posts.

Hey Beth, thanks for the comments. I did move my database over, but when I restored into MySQL I could not login to the system. I had a couple of questions out on the MT board and BlogOMania board, but no answers. So I just exported and imported within Movable Type. You’re right, the post numbers were fouled up from deleting the other blogs. I felt sick to my stomach when I figured it out. Oh well. Thanks!
