Read On, Ted.
I’ve kept up with the so-called controversy over Ted Koppel reading the names of our war fatalities. We can run the names of the 9-11 victims as a backdrop to a U2 song during a Superbowl, but we can’t run the name of fallen soldiers during a news program. One is entertainment, the other news. And yet somehow, the news program is the controversial one.

I don’t have a problem with Ted reading the names, but the comparison to the 9.11 names isn’t great. The 9.11 names were read after all the names of the deceased were known – people are still dying in Iraq. Is there going to be another show next year at this time to read off the additional soldiers who’ve died in Iraq?
And if this is about honoring or recognizing the dead soldiers as Koppel claims, they why only the Iraq war dead. Why not also include those who’ve died in Afghanistan?
That Koppel has cherry picked the names he choses to read, and does so during sweeps week, reveals alot about his motivations – despite his denials.
