In Brief

I have a week off with :

Three Websites to work on…
I’m working on Drumblog and EvD’s new project and if time allows, I might look at some updates here.

Two computers…
I’m going to play around with Linux for the first time in a few years, maybe even setup a desktop for me. I also have a client’s machine that needs an update.

The purchasing of new business clothes…
Of course, I can’t wear jeans at the new place, so I have to purchase some pants. I’ve lost about twenty pounds in the time that I had worked in printing, so my old dress pants don’t fit..

Recording with the band…
We’re working with a semi-new line up and it’s just me and the singer/songwriter left. We’ve started to work with a new guitarist, who I’ve known for years. He’s also producing and we’re trying to see if we can mesh what we’ve created and arranged to his ideas.

MySpace….
I’ve become a little addicted to MySpace, it seems like everyone will eventually be on there. I suspect that we’ll eventually have to vote for Tom as a government official or perhaps we’ll actually find Jimmy Hoffa on someone’s profile.

My very first girlfriend from high school just signed up and that blows my mind. She’s 35 and until I started getting more involved, I only thought it was the haunt of tweens, teens and young adults. I’m connecting with *lots* of people from my past. I’m finding kids who I mentored during my camp counselor days in the late 80′s early 90′s and most are married with kids and are in their mid/late-20′s….shit I feel old.

I have some work people in my friends list, some music people, some school people, and just close friends….well aside from having Margaret Cho in there.

  1. I have recently dove into Linux with a vengeance. Man, things have changed since my Red Hat disaster of ’03.

Modern distros are cake to install. The barrier to entry is remarkably low and the three distros I’m testing (Ubuntu, Kbuntu and Mandriva) all grabbed up my peripherals and network without so much as a hiccup.

I’m not ready to give up Photoshop and gaming yet so will always need a Windows box to run them and for testing, but I can safely say that 80% of my time is spent using Mandriva. This is also my most productive time. I can finally speak the same language that the servers I administer speak and the more I delve into the command line the more I like it. Wicked powerful stuff.

One wee tip. If your burning the OS take the time to check the md5 hash. I skipped it a couple of times and lost a few hours unecessarily. Also, if Ubuntu appeals to you they will be happy to send you disks at no cost. They say several weeks but I had mine in a matter of days.
