Why tote around these large laptops, when you can have a netbook and plug it in, quazi-dockings station style, and have a full desktop w/ monitor for under $500.

Todd Dominey has a very pimped-out office. Very nice, love how the cables are hidden through a compartment under the desk.

My main home computing environment, is a laptop in my lap or on the coffee table while I’m sitting on the floor. This is how I really dig cable-less offices. Having a laptop w/ Skype or Vonage could literally mean having one wire: power.

We do have a nasty cabled computer, a XP box under a nice (non-computer) desk. It mainly handles our CD & DVD ripping/burning. We’re soon to ditch that machine/desk combo in favor of an all laptop home…aside from the server running casanet. We’re adding a small little area in the closet of the 2nd bedroom, so we can have a printer, a place to hold our tiny server, and for our scanner. If I worked at home, I don’t think I’d change this setup too much.

Well that knocks people out, applying for any position even remotely related to health care, insurance or anything were personal health data is concerned. The US Government puts strict controls on the companies who they deal with.

Where I work now, they don’t put CD-Rs or floppy drives unless you have special permission. And don’t even get me started on how they block *all* webmail. Because someone, somewhere could remotely possible send someone else’s personal data over the web. And yeah, flash drives and chat are nixed too.

But you know what? I get paid well so not having webmail isn’t that big of a deal. I can still SMS from my cellphone and (coming soon) will have web access there too. I’m here to work, not blog or chat or email anyone that’s not about work…..

I’m testing Google’s Writely online word processor. It’s not bad, haven’t played with it enough to say either way. I have a strong suspicion that my work will probably block this through their filters, because of the minute possibility of someone using this to violate privacy.

It’s neat enough, that I can post to a blog from it *and* have spell check. This part is very very cool. Between Writely, Gmail, Google Spreadsheets, Calendar and Google Talk. They have a nice little online office package. Throw in Blogger and you have most of what Microsoft has been offering most companies for years: Exchange, MS Office and Sharepoint now have decent, free, and online competitors.

Talk about a revelation this morning. Look through Google’s offerings and see how close they are to the “Web OS “.
