Statement from Morrissey re: Mike Joyce

December 5th, 2005

{Statement from Morrissey | True To You} – “The latest statements from M Joyce on a BBC 6 radio interview as faithfully reported on the MorrisseySoLow site have been brought to my attention and I feel I should make this reply as an attempt to put the matter straight.”

The outspoken Mr. Morrissey goes on about how Mike Joyce is a money-grubbing jerk.

8. By grabbing the full total of Smiths royalties from Warner Music (and this means that when the public buy a Smiths CD in the UK, the royalties go to Joyce, and have done so since 2001) Joyce has knowingly deprived Andy Rourke of his 10% Smiths royalties, and has deprived producers John Porter, Stephen Street, Grant Showbiz and Steve Lillywhite (for “Ask”) of their entitlements. Joyce did not declare to the courts that others – namely, the above – were also beneficiaries to the Warner Music royalties.”

Well, thanks to that Mike, a full Smiths reunion is doubtful. But I’ll go ahead and say that if Morrissey-Marr ever want to reunite, I’ll be glad to sit behind the kit..

Stapp Fight, Slap Fight

December 2nd, 2005

{Ex-Creed singer Stapp, 311 in fight} – “But Stapp later came into the Harbor Court Hotel bar while Sexton and bandmates SA Martinez and P-Nut were watching basketball on television. He stepped in front of the screen and said, “311, I am ready to fight,” according to Sexton.”

Two overrated (and hasbeen) groups fight and it makes CNN. Meanwhile, we still have problems getting rock music on the radio.

{Soul Shine Magazine : Chad Kroger suing former Nickleback drummer}

Vikedal participated in several hit albums for the band including The State, Silver Side Up and The Long Road. But now Kroger wants himself and his publishing company to own the sole rights to those three Nickelback albums. Not only does he want the former drummer to stop receiving royalties but he wants him to repay any royalties already received.

(to which the author thinks, “Wow, Chad Kroger is a dick”.) If Ryan played on the albums, then he is entitled to a mechanical royalty. If Ryan wrote the melody and lyrics, or had a hand in, then he is also entitled to a royalty from that. Asking a musician to give back a mechanical royalty is akin to getting an annulment to a 15-year marriage.

Web site to curb access to illegal movies – Technology – International Herald Tribune

The creator of software used by millions of computer owners to download movies has agreed to prevent his Web site from linking to illegally available movies online, the latest result of a bid by Hollywood to gain control of a growing piracy problem.

The problem is, it’s not a website but a protocol like TCP/IP. So are they going to block it from the protocol or just from BitTorrent clients? What about 3rd party clients? (the author scratches his head) What about applications? Is this just for media?

This will kill BitTorrent, this will drive some young programmer to program some BT-killer (btk, hey that would be a good name….) and then all of the media groups would then go after them, until they make that new protocol into a limp image of their former self…like napster.

[Yoko Ono Extends Olive Branch To Paul McCartney] As much as I can’t stand Yoko Ono, I have to say that I agree with her assessment of McCartney’s songwriting. McCartney was more of the traditionalist with Lennon pushing the bounds, so Yoko was very apt when she said, “You’re a good songwriter, it’s not June with spoon that you rhyme”.

I didn’t become a fan of the Beatles until I was around 19 years old, when I read an early biography of the pre-Sgt. Peppers Beatles. I started to dive into that music much more and yes….I will say that John’s lyrics are more of my favorite than Paul’s.
