A look toward the new year

December 29th, 2008

I’ve started to set a personal agenda for 2009. Yeah yeah yeah, it’s not quite a “New Years Resolution” list, more like a project plan. I’m tending toward treating most things like a project plan now, so just bear w/ me. okies?

Health

Everyone’s favorite New Year’s Resolution. I want to take better care of myself and have more control over my various ailments (t2d, hypothyroidism, etc).

Charity

I had a very moving Christmas by forgoing any “material” gift and instead giving, what I would have spent, to a local charity. I don’t know if I should look at these as “gifts” and “donations” or as “investments”. I’ll have a post later about this, but I decided to have a pet charity in 2009, where I’m investing time and money. I know we’re in this middle of a big financial problem, but this is the time people less fortunate than we are, need help more than ever.

Work

I’m very fortunate to have a good job for a good company. I’m also very fortunate to have some upcoming projects in 2009: Chattarati, GreenInk and a few others. Chattarati has grown so much in the past months that sometimes it’s overwhelming. GreenInk…it’s another hyper-local project…more later.

2008 was such a long year, lots of projects and lots of events and still….it was all-in-all good. Realism sets in and we never know what serendipitous twists might happen. As long as I can look forward to the good and maneuver around the bad, it’s gonna be ok.

hey hear this – why?

December 1st, 2008

I came out of the womb, almost 35 years ago, as a music lover. From an early age, I loved listening to the radio and then to records, then tapes, and CDs and now just MP3s. I’m an eclectic dude and my music tastes are just as varied.

I’m not some guru of music, just a fan, and I want to share some of my favorite tunes from time to time. Some of what I share might be unhip, or just old. I share what I like.

Thanksgiving 2008 – A Project

November 26th, 2008

Tomorrow will be our first Thanksgiving in the new house, along with the fact that this will be our first time hosting the Thanksgiving dinner outside of my Grandmother’s house. We’re not really freaking out, we have our food, people have their assignments, but it’s the first time we’re having a group of people over.

As much as I vowed to have a “bohemian” Thanksgiving in the past, where it’s not so much a blood family thing but what I view as an extended family, those close to us without really a destination or a purpose for the holiday. We’re sticking tightly to the traditional, bird, stuffing, pie, etc. No strange little bits of turkey floating around, just being normal…which it’s not easy for me to slip into.

We started really by having a meeting at the kitchen table a few weeks back, me in my role as project manager, the Wifey as kitchen coordinator and my Mom as the external communications person. One rule: play nice. We’re doing well, no arguments or disagreements because it’s really a laid-back day. Eat and socialise.

So yes, I tried to run Thanksgiving as a project. Timelines, resource lists and a very basic statement of work where everyone could agree on what they’d bring and what they’d do…from tables and chairs to green bean casserole. Luckily, I didn’t need QA to check my documentation.

Have a happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you enjoy your day and take time to reflect on life and the great bounty we’ve received because of sacrifices through the years. 2008 has been the busiest time of my life and I am thankful for the support from both my family and my extended bohemian family.

Endurance

October 2nd, 2008

I believe the height of my endurance, was sometime last week as I passed the 12 hour mark for the day. The low point, was this week as I kept running toward a goal but with a lot of small things to do. You just want to see daylight, put your feet up and kiss your loved ones. You want to enjoy what’s enabled by these long hours.

I tend to have a rule of only doing this a couple of times a year. This one, was it. A stretch of about 6 weeks to get a site built while contending with business needs for two additional projects sucking up resources.

Right now, it’s like being released from the hospital. You’re still getting accustomed to the world again, you’re still enjoying the wonders of daylight and your brain is a little fried. Still trying to get bearings and not overwhelmed at what you ignored.

Porch

September 10th, 2008

While we finally got moved into the new house, I’m working on about 4 projects and that’s pushing my work schedule from 8:30 to 8:30. If I had internet at home, it wouldn’t be bad. I could just VPN into work and update from the porch.

I think that’s one of the things about my new house I absolutely love, the porch. I can sit out and relax and not think about work or about anything. I can sit back and listen to the tree frogs out in the evening, enjoying the weather, and decompress from a busy day. Once these projects hit production, I’ll be able to enjoy this a bit more

Home at last

September 7th, 2008

So, if you’ve been following me on Twitter, you might caught on that I’ve been moving into a house. This is my & my wife’s first house in our 7.5 years of marriage, and it’s one we’re gonna call our own.

As we thought, it was our easiest moves between the apartments and our townhouse. First off, it’s nice not having two levels. Plus, we really don’t have a lot of large things. In looking in our “triage” today, I think it really set in that we have a lot of junk….stuff we won’t miss.

In the move from our two bedroom 1st place, to our one bedroom 2nd place, we both sold, trashed, etc lots of furniture, drums, or for a lesser term: “crap”. We didn’t really accumulate much more, we trashed and replaced couches and beds, but we never really had a lot of room either way.

Saturday was the real test. Long day, two people moving all of their stuff, largest truck I’ve ever driven and just a really tiring day. Sometimes, we pushed each other when we were ready to quit, but it was a real joy and real work and it was much much later when the brevity of the situation happened. I sat on my couch and looked around the room and it really hit me, “this is our place”. I will admit, the last thing we unloaded was my bike and even though I was very tired, I took a victory lap around the property. I wish I had some photos so I can show that even though we were sweaty, tired and bruised, we were smiling.

So today, Sunday, we’re unpacking boxes, hooking up electronics and just…well, moving in. We still have a couple of rooms to deal with and trying to figure out how to get our cats better acclimated to the situation. We did get to sleep in, 9, and it was just nice waking up to our trees and grass and seeing the sun peak through the windows.
